Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie says the Newcastle United takeover could be announced today.

At the start of Wednesday, fans were bemoaning the fact that Steve Bruce is still manager after a woeful start to the season.

By the end of the day the whole landscape of the club looked set to change.

The Magpies are going to go from unambitious Premier League survivors under Mike Ashley to a club that wants to further itself.

After 14 years, Ashley’s time at St James’ Park is coming to an end.

And according to Sky Sports, October 7th 2021 could be the final day of his ownership.

“I can tell you that major development is that it could be announced later on today,” he said.

“All parties working around the clock, by all parties I mean Newcastle United, I mean the Premier League, and I mean the consortium themselves, to try and push this takeover through in time to have the keys here at St James’ Park for the next game against Spurs after the international break.

“This deal is close, edging closer. Some big movement over night. We’re hoping we can announce the takeover of the £300million Saudi-backed consortium of Newcastle United later on today.”

A lot of fans would have been dreading the next game against Tottenham on October 17th. The Magpies are 19th in the league and still without a win under Steve Bruce.

Now it has the potential to be the best atmosphere inside St James’ Park in forever.

If the takeover goes through, St James’ Park will be packed. There won’t be a free seat in the house. Fans who walked away during Ashley’s reign will return.

The buzz around the club is back after having the life sucked out of it over the past 14 years.

It looks like today could be the day.
