Tuesday night brought a fresh takeover claim, with 90min stating that Mike Ashley is still confident about selling Newcastle United to PCP Capital Partners.
According to 90min, Ashley expects to hand the keys over in January.
Confidence is a dangerous word when it comes to the Newcastle takeover. It’s been said a lot since Amanda Staveley struck a deal back in April 2020.
Since then we’ve had claims and counterclaims, as well as two legal challenges against the Premier League.

The fact is this – Mike Ashley still owns Newcastle United.
Fans will be praying that the owner’s confidence proves to be worthwhile. otherwise the immediate future is bleak. The current state of the club is already grim, with a tough start to the season piling the pressure on manager Steve Bruce.
Ashley’s reported confidence comes from one of his legal challenges, with arbitration set to take place in early 2022. 90min claim that Ashley expects to be successful.
Arbitration was initially meant to happen this summer, but it was delayed until next year due to ‘issues with the disclosure of evidence’.

While Ashley’s confidence could be seen as a positive, he has no reason not to be positive. Why would he go ahead with a legal challenge that he doesn’t expect to win?
The saga has been going on so long that the majority of fans aren’t even excited by this report. They’re tired of the constant noise and chit-chat, desperate for some actual clarity – or better still a conclusion.
Some fans have reacted to the claim on Twitter, and believe Ashley is just lining up his excuse for a lack of spending in January.
