Newcastle suffer Fabian Schar injury scare ahead of Nottingham Forest

Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar will not represent Switzerland during the upcoming international break due to injury, casting doubt over whether he will be involved against Nottingham Forest tonight.

Schar returned to the Newcastle starting lineup last week after recovering from a head injury. The centre-back had suffered a concussion during the Carabao Cup final, which forced him to miss the trip to Manchester City.

But he returned against Wolves to partner Sven Botman, forcing captain Jamaal Lascelles to return to the bench.

The 31-year-old played very well, and there appears to have been no concerns about his fitness ahead of the trip to the City Ground.

Schar featured in the club’s official training pictures, while Eddie Howe did not name him as a doubt during his pre-match press conference. Schar scored in the reverse fixture against Forest, with Matt Targett describing his goal as ‘unbelievable‘.

However, a report from Swiss outlet RTN suggests that the ÂŁ3million defender has an issue.

Fabian Schar to miss Switzerland games due to injury

According to RTN, Schar has decided against representing his country during the upcoming international break so that he can stay on Tyneside to treat a ‘recurring foot pain’.

They take on Belarus and Israel in two qualifiers for Euro 2024, but will not be able to call upon Schar.

With Newcastle set to take on Nottingham Forest tonight, it will be interesting to see if Schar is involved. Obviously he played last week and has trained in the buildup, but it surely isn’t a very good look back home if he is happy to play through the pain in the Premier League but doesn’t want to represent his country.

The two week break is a good chance for Newcastle to treat any injury niggles they have picked up, and it sounds like that is what Schar has got.

We await team news at 7pm, and all eyes will be on who partners Botman at centre-back. If Schar is not deemed fit enough to play then Lascelles is the likely candidate to come in. That would see him captain Newcastle against his former club.
