Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson says he is yet to meet Alan Shearer.
The 28-year-old enjoyed a great first season at St. James’ Park, scoring 12 goals for the club in total.
Injuries limited him to just 28 appearances, but his contributions were key.
Wilson was regularly praised by Shearer during 2020/21, and the former Bournemouth man is keen to thank the Toon legend for his comments.
He told FourFourTwo: “I’d love the chance to shake him by the hand, chat football and thank him for all the kind things he’s said about me on TV or in the media. It’s very flattering.”
Wilson currently leads the line for Newcastle, but he doesn’t wear the famous number nine jersey, as Shearer did.
At the moment it’s held by Joelinton.
Newcastle fans have some strong opinions about that, but Wilson doesn’t mind too much.
“The bottom line is that I play football for the badge on the front of the shirt, not the number on the back,” he added. “That doesn’t mean I’m not familiar or in awe of the history of the No.9 shirt and those who have worn it.”

That is exactly what Newcastle supporters want to hear.
Toon fans can live with the club not challenging for Europe, but many only yearn for a couple of things.
A bit of ambition shown, and for players to play for the badge.
Down the years, too many have been happy to pull on the shirt and play with a passion that just doesn’t match the level of the supporters.
Wilson may have only been at the club for a year, but he has clearly grasped what it’s all about.
He’ll certainly get a wonderful reception when his name is finally read out to a full St. James’ Park.
