Thursday is all about the Champions League draw for Newcastle United fans, but it will not be Callum Wilson’s only focus.
The Magpies will soon discover who they are going to face in the Champions League, with the competition due to begin next month.
However, before then there is an international break that will see multiple Newcastle players represent their countries.
England take on Ukraine in a Euro 2024 qualifier followed by a friendly against Scotland, with at least one member of Eddie Howe’s squad set to be involved. Sky Sports believe that Kieran Trippier will definitely be in the squad, which will come as no surprise.
However, it is less certain as to whether or not Wilson will get the callup from Gareth Southgate.
Callum Wilson could be dropped from England squad
According to Sky Sports, Wilson could be replaced in the England squad by Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins when it is announced on Thursday.
The report states that while Wilson was involved in the last squad, he has started the new campaign on the Newcastle bench. The 31-year-old has not started any of the Magpies’ games so far, with Howe choosing Alexander Isak to lead the line.
That could reportedly lead to Wilson missing out and being replaced by Watkins, who has enjoyed a decent start to the new season under Unai Emery. While he is yet to score, he does have three assists, setting up a goal in all three of Villa’s games so far.
That includes the game at St James’ Park that saw Wilson score his only goal of the season. But while he has more goals than Watkins at the moment, he could be replaced by the Villa man.
It would be a blow for Newcastle’s number nine, although he has not really done enough to justify a place in Southgate’s squad over the past few weeks.
Sky Sports are unsure whether or not Wilson will join Trippier in the squad, while there is no news on Nick Pope, who missed the previous England camp due to injury but is fully fit now.
