Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes’ injury concern ahead of Manchester City clash

Bruno Guimaraes left it all out on the pitch at Wembley yesterday, but now faces an anxious week after picking up another ankle injury in the EFL Cup final against Manchester United.

With Newcastle set to face Manchester City on Saturday, having the likes of Bruno Guimaraes fit and firing is a necessity if we are to get anything from the game, but according to The Chronicle, the Brazilian faces a fitness test after picking up a knock at Wembley after he “suffered a fresh ankle injury during the Carabao Cup final”

Eddie Howe confirmed the knock, saying: “Bruno twisted his ankle. I think he did similar – against Fulham – but not too long ago in a match. He was in a bit of pain.

“We don’t think it’s serious at the moment, but let’s wait and see.”

Newcastle head into another huge game on Saturday off the back of cup final disappointment and a run of form that suggests that Eddie Howe’s men may be running out of steam and possibly even running out of ideas.

Goals have been extremely difficult to come by for Newcastle recently, and not having arguably our best player in Bruno Guimaraes available for three games due to suspension was a big factor in that. The £40m man returned from his suspension in time to face Manchester United, but despite his presence and typically excellent performance, he was unable spur Newcastle on to even coming close to bagging their first Wembley goal in a final for 54 years.

It’s all about the league now and ensuring we stay around those European qualification spots and Bruno will be absolutely key to that, but with champions Manchester City up next and Bruno carrying a knock, we are definitely going to have to do things the hard way.

Even if Guimaraes is fit enough to play, our recent form suggests we are going to have a hard time, but there would be no better way to bounce back from a cup final disappointment than picking up maximum points against the current champions.

There was always a feeling that Newcastle‘s dip in form may have been down to players having one eye on the final, so with that now out of the way, hopefully they can turn their attentions to the task at hand.
