Former Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll signed a short-term contract with Reading yesterday. He has joined the Championship outfit for the next two months and could play against Forest on Saturday. After announcing the deal, Callum Wilson and Joe Hart reacted on Instagram.
Carroll was a popular figure in the Newcastle dressing room last season. He checked in for a second spell with the Magpies in August 2019 but failed to make an impact.
In typical fashion, the striker struggled to stay fit. Last season he started just four games for Newcastle and netted just a single goal in Steve Bruce’s team.
The 32-year-old came through the youth ranks at St James’ Park and looked like he would go on to enjoy a successful career. Whilst that may be the case there is an argument to suggest he’s not fulfilled his potential.
In total, Carroll scored 34 goals and claimed 26 assists during 134 appearances. He also played for Liverpool and West Ham during his career to this point.
Eyebrows were raised in 2011 when Liverpool parted with £35 million to sign Carroll. At Anfield, he scored 11 goals and claimed six assists in 58 appearances for the club.
What have Hart and Wilson said about former Newcastle striker Carroll?
Hart will have featured alongside Carroll during his nine caps for England and also during Hart’s short spell with West Ham.
He took to Instagram in the aftermath of his move to Reading to wish him well over his latest foray into the Championship.
Carroll could take a lot from Hart, with the goalkeeper rediscovering some confidence at Celtic.
Wilson was in direct competition for a Newcastle place with Carroll last season. He also took to Instagram to wish his former teammate nothing but the best in his latest chapter.
