Newcastle United have now been told that one of their transfer targets and versatile Everton defender will now cost just £9m if they want to make a move in January.
Newcastle are very keen on bolstering their team this month with reinforcements but it’s become very clear that there is not a lot to spend, hence why their main target is to loan Kalvin Phillips.
A new report from Football Transfers now claims that Everton are asking for just £9m for Ben Godfrey who Newcastle have admired for a while now.
Everton ready to sell Godfrey in January, Newcastle are waiting in the wings
Having fallen down the pecking order at Goodison Park, Everton are ready to cut ties with Godfrey in January whose contract will expire in the summer of 2025.
The 25-year-old has made just two appearances in the Premier League this season for Sean Dyche’s side as James Tarkowski, Michael Keane and breakthrough star Jarrad Branthwaite have been the preferred options in defence.
Newcastle, who have shown previous interest in the ‘impressive‘ Everton centre-back, are now looking to swoop in for this cut-price deal with limited funds to spend in the transfer window.
Godfrey will be keen to play more regular football and Newcastle are thought to be keen on bolstering their defence, though whether they do that in this month or wait until the summer is not quite clear.

Newcastle need added depth in January
One thing Newcastle have really struggled with is the quality in options when they pick up a few injuries. We saw earlier this month that the lack of depth on the bench really hinders Eddie Howe’s intense style of play as the same starting 11 were playing time and time again.
Godfrey’s versatility to play across the back four is exactly why Newcastle would be interested in the Everton man as they look to improve in virtually every position.
At left-back in particular Newcastle have looked weak this season with Dan Burn not as effective as he was last year and Tino Livramento often having to cover down the left flank.
