Newcastle should seek January deal for Winks after Carabao Cup snub

Newcastle have to reignite their interest in out-of-favour Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks in the January transfer window.

The England international was dropped from Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad to face Burnley in the Carabao Cup last night.

Winks was left behind in North London and didn’t even travel to face Sean Dyche’s side.

With just one Premier League start to his name this season which came in the 3-0 capitulation at Crystal Palace, it looks like Winks can’t even make Nuno’s cup squads now.

Being dropped from the Carabao Cup squad comes after Winks spoke of his frustration at Tottenham last week, hinting that he would be open to leaving the club.

Yesterday’s decision could prove to be the final nail in Winks’ Tottenham coffin and he may have already played his last Spurs game under the former Wolves boss.

Winks, who became a key player at Tottenham under Mauricio Pochettino, will probably have a number of clubs chasing his signature in January, with Newcastle United keen according to The Sun.

After missing out on Winks in the summer, Newcastle’s new manager could see the 25-year-old as the perfect option to help bring an element of control to the Magpies’ midfield.

Although Tottenham wanted £40million over the summer for the 10-time England international, his lack of minutes will mean his value has plummeted.

Unless Newcastle’s fortunes dramatically change heading into the new year and we are clear of the relegation zone, Winks may only be interested in a loan move, which could suit all parties.

Pochettino once labelled Winks ‘perfect’, but Spurs’ number eight hasn’t kicked on since the Argentinian manager left the club. He has also lost his place in Gareth Southgate’s England side.

A move to Newcastle could help reignite Winks and he could be the ideal signing to help glue a potential new-look Newcastle side together.
