If Newcastle are signing players, they need to be better than what they’ve already got. And Djibril Sidibe would be exactly that.
A few seasons ago, this signing wouldn’t have been possible. The defender was part of an incredible Monaco side that won the league and almost reached a European Cup final.
Alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Bernardo Silva, Sidibe played a key role as Monaco made it to the Champions League semi-final under Leonardo Jardim.
That team has been torn apart, with the big names heading all across Europe and enjoying varying degrees of success.
But Sidibe never got a move. And now he’s a target for average Premier League clubs like Newcastle, West Ham and Crystal Palace.
While his stock has certainly fallen, the 26-year-old is better than what we already have at right-back.
DeAndre Yedlin and Javi Manquillo have done a decent job, but they have to be at their very best to make it through a Premier League game unscathed. They have too many flaws in their game.
We’ve been linked with a move for James Tavernier, but he wouldn’t improve our options. Sidibe certainly would.
The Monaco right-back would be a great signing for Newcastle, adding extra quality to an area where we distinctly lack just that. And he’s a World Cup winner as well, which is pretty good going. I wonder if he’ll show us all his medal…
