Newcastle United have been heavily linked with a move for a new goalkeeper this month, but are yet to bring anyone in.
Ever since the summer, Rafa Benitez has made it pretty clear that he wants a new goalkeeper at St James’ Park, clearly not fully trusting Rob Elliot or Karl Darlow, as well as shipping Toon hero Tim Krul off to Brighton without even giving the Dutchman a chance.
Benitez has chopped and changed his keeper this season, and both Elliot and Darlow have showcased their strengths and their weaknesses, with individual errors costing Newcastle on more than one occasion.
However, in a month when Newcastle really need to address their goal-scoring crisis, is bringing in a new goalkeeper really the most pressing issue?
While both goalkeepers clearly have their flaws, the Magpies are not going to get anyone notably better (unless Pepe Reina fancies linking back up with Rafa). It seems like a waste of both time and resources looking for a keeper; time and resources that could be used to fund a move for a new striker who could get the goals to keep Newcastle in the Premier League.
Sure, the arrival of a new goalkeeper could allow Freddie Woodman the chance to go out on loan and get some experience, but if it is a choice between a goalkeeper and an attacker, the choice is obvious…
