In an episode of late transfer window drama, Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden has been linked with a move to Standard Liege.

According to The Daily Mail, Standard Liege are interested in signing Isaac Hayden from Newcastle United before the transfer window closes at 11pm UK time tonight.

Newcastle certainly won’t stand in the way of any potential exit for Hayden. Manager Eddie Howe has previously stated that the 28-year-old has been a “great servant” to the Tyneside club, but he has made it equally clear that he has no future at St James’ Park, as quoted by Chronicle Live.

Alongside fellow outcasts Jeff Hendrick and Ryan Fraser, Howe has been clear that the Magpies wish to move the trio on this summer. He may be about to get his wish in the case of Hayden, if Standard Liege can get a deal for the former Arsenal academy ace over the line in time.

Time is up for Hayden at Newcastle

It is unclear at this stage if the Belgian outfit are seeking to secure the player’s services on a temporary loan basis, or if they want to sign Hayden permanently. Whatever the case may be, Hayden needs to find a move away from Newcastle to stand any chance of playing regular first team football this season, and the clock is against him.

He had been set to join newly-promoted Premier League side Luton Town on loan earlier this week. However, that proposed switch collapsed, and it has since looked as though Hayden may get stranded at St James’ Park until the January transfer window at least.

Standard Liege now look to have offered a lifeline that Hayden must seize.

The midfielder will leave Newcastle with the good wishes of the fans. He was a fine player for the club in darker days, when they were in the Championship or fighting for Premier League survival. The club have since moved on and improved, and left Hayden in their wake, but his contribution to the cause ought to be remembered fondly on Tyneside.
