Newcastle now want ‘gem’ of a midfielder who could be available this summer

Newcastle United are expected to be busy in the January transfer window.

Naturally, following Sandro Tonali’s ban from football, midfield is believed to be a priority heading into the market.

Newcastle are also reportedly considering signing a forward too but the midfield has obviously been weakened by Tonali’s absence.

Indeed, the Italian and Bruno Guimaraes are the only two midfield players signed since the takeover, albeit Joelinton’s rebirth in that position has helped too.

As such, plenty of names have been linked. Kalvin Phillips and Ruben Neves are perhaps the headline examples but a new link has now emerged.

Kenneth Taylor transfer: Newcastle keen on Ajax star

According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle are among a raft of clubs keen on Ajax’s Kenneth Taylor.

The Dutch giants have endured a miserable campaign and are reportedly considering selling the 21-year-old in order to raise funds.

Both Manchester clubs are said to be keen on the 21-year-old, along with Tottenham, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Brighton.

A deal, however, is said to be more likely this summer than in January.

Kenneth Taylor to Newcastle: Who is transfer target?

Capable of being a defensive midfielder, Taylor made his senior debut back in December 2020.

He has since been capped at senior level by the Netherlands and he has even been compared to Toni Kroos, such is his range of passing. Speaking to The Times in 2022, former Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar hailed the midfielder as a “gem”.

Still, there could be a problem. In July 2022, Taylor said of his best position to Football Oranje: “My favourite position is like how we play at Ajax, the number eight.”

Given Guimaraes has previously expressed similar feelings, Newcastle could be left without a player who is a specialised No.6, albeit the Brazilian is starring there right now.

Perhaps one to chase in the summer…
