Newcastle United are now starting to show interest in a title-winning goalkeeper as they look to improve the squad in January.

Nick Pope’s injury has been a huge blow to Newcastle in the last few weeks and Martin Dubravka is yet to prove why he deserves to be the first choice to play backup.

A new report from Defensa Central now suggests that Newcastle could look to sign Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin to replace the Slovakian.

Newcastle want a new goalkeeper in January

Newcastle are clearly not happy with the standard of performance that Dubravka has been putting in lately despite Howe suggesting earlier this month that he has full faith in him to be at his best.

It does feel like Dubravka’s time has come and gone and that the shot-stopper should have departed the club as they were making the transition to Champions League football.

With Pope out for most of the season and Dubravka underperforming, the club on the lookout for a new goalkeeper and already have a couple of names in mind with David de Gea and Aaron Ramsdale having been linked.

This is the first time Lunin’s name has been mentioned in a conversation about Newcastle but the 24-year-old may be looking for more regular football having played backup to Thibaut Courtois so far in the Spanish capital.

Lunin has even impressed Jude Bellingham

Real Madrid are understood to be big fans of Lunin despite his lack of game time, and the Ukrainian has even claimed that Madrid’s star man Jude Bellingham struggles against him.

The 24-year-old is clearly a very talented goalkeeper who has been described as ‘outstanding‘, otherwise he wouldn’t be at one of if not the biggest team in Europe, but it doesn’t matter where you are players are always going to want to play football.

Lunin has been somewhat fortunate this season in that Courtois and Kepa Arizabalaga have both been injured so he’s had to step up and play in seven La Liga games this year, but he’s not their long-term option.

Newcastle could be an attractive opportunity for the young goalkeeper where he can make his name in the Premier League and forge out a very successful career.
