Newcastle United are defying expectations.
Saturday’s comeback win over Brentford has tightened their grip on a top four spot heading into the final stretch of the campaign, completing a great week for Eddie Howe’s side.
They followed up wins over Wolves and Nottingham Forest before the international break with victories against Manchester United, West Ham and the Bees.
While not at their best in west London, Newcastle proved they have the fight for the top four, turning the game around brilliantly.
This last week has proven something of a statement. To have won twice on the road after beating Man United underlines just how relentless Howe’s team can be.
Where many would have predicted a drop off following the Carabao Cup final and subsequent defeat at Manchester City, Newcastle are back to something approaching their best.
Indeed, people are taking notice.
Gary Neville changes top four prediction
So much so that Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has changed his view on the top four race.
The former Man United defender has previously been dismissive of Newcastle’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League but has now backed Howe’s side to make it.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville said: “Looking at them now, watching them closely last Sunday against Manchester United where I thought they were absolutely brilliant.
“I think they will finish in the top four now because the confidence will be so high.”
Aston Villa game is huge
Next up, Newcastle face a difficult looking trip to Aston Villa.
Unai Emery – the man PIF originally wanted before appointing Howe – has yielded a vast improvement out of the squad and his team are one of the form sides in the Premier League.
If Newcastle can win at Villa Park, it would be a huge statement. Tottenham and Manchester United have more favourable looking fixtures against Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest respectively, so three points will probably be needed in the Midlands to keep the Magpies in the top four.
Win that and perhaps more doubters will follow Neville.
