According to the Chronicle, Newcastle are searching for a new left-back this summer.

Antonio Barreca joined on loan in January with an option to sign him permanently, but the Italian has only made one appearance since arriving.

It’s highly unlikely that the Magpies will take up the option to make Barreca a permanent Magpie. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Rafa Benitez has scouts out looking for a new option to play on the left side of defence.

But the defeat to Crystal Palace proved that Newcastle need a new right-back even more.

Yedlin let himself down once again

Had it not been for a DeAndre Yedlin self-implosion, we would’ve got at least a point against Palace.

With Wilfried Zaha going nowhere, Yedlin came charging in to try and win possession, instead tripping the Palace talisman and conceding a penalty which was converted by Luka Milivojevic.

This wasn’t the first time the American has let the Magpies down defensively, and it won’t be the last. While we might have a tiny bit of depth at right-back with Javi Manquillo in reserve, neither options are good enough.

On the left of defence, Paul Dummett is as reliable as they come. He’s not offensively gifted, but is as good as most when it comes to pure defending.

It’s quality over quantity.

We need more quality at right-back more than we need another body on the left.
