Newcastle must hope Ramsey's Juventus failure puts Lingard off Italy move

Newcastle United may have to fend off the likes of Juventus to sign Jesse Lingard this summer.

That’s according to the Telegraph, who claim Italian side Juve and AC Milan are interested in snapping up the midfielder on a free transfer. They add that a move to Italy is a serious option for Lingard.

But Newcastle are in the mix too, and the Northern Echo recently reported that the Magpies have opened talks with the 29-year-old. Eddie Howe is keen to add him to his squad, having missed out in January.

With Lingard on the brink of becoming a free agent, there are a lot more clubs interested. Big clubs too.

Both Juve and AC should be in next season’s Champions League, which may tempt Lingard to head abroad. He will also have seen the likes of Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham thrive in Serie A.

However, perhaps a Welshman’s struggles can convince Lingard that Italy isn’t the place for him.

Newcastle target Jesse Lingard could become the next Aaron Ramsey – and that’s not a good thing

In 2019, Aaron Ramsey’s Arsenal contract expired and he signed a deal with Juventus worth a whopping £400,000-a-week.

He won a league title and a Coppa Italia with the Old Lady, but that doesn’t tell the full story.

In truth, Ramsey has struggled for minutes in Turin. Across two and a half seasons, he only played 49 league games, starting just 25.

The contract he signed was worth a fortune, but it effectively priced him out of a move away from Juventus. He eventually joined Rangers in January, looking to salvage his reputation.

He’s a fantastic player whose career has been blighted by injury, but even when fit he struggled to get into the Juventus starting XI.

Moving to Juve was a disaster for Ramsey, and could hopefully serve as a warning to Lingard. If he wants to play in black and white, it should be with Newcastle.
