Newcastle United have reportedly launched a bid to sign Lucas Digne from Everton.

According to the Telegraph, the Magpies have offered £22.5million for the wantaway left-back. Digne has fallen out with Rafa Benitez, and seems set to leave Everton this month.

The report adds that Sean Longstaff was offered in the deal too.

However, this is where the confusion begins. After talk of a bid for Digne, Sky them claimed that a bid hadn’t been made. Instead, Everton had made a bid for Longstaff, but the Shields Gazette are now stating that the offer has been rejected. Are you keeping up?

Whether or not an official bid has been made, Digne’s reported stance over a possible Newcastle transfer should tell the Magpies everything they need to know.

Does Lucas Digne want to join Newcastle?

According to the Telegraph, Digne wants to assess his options before making a decision on a possible Newcastle move. The report adds that he wants to wait and see if Chelsea or West Ham make an offer.

Of course, this does not categorically mean he does not want to join Newcastle. It could just be the work of his agent who obviously wants to get his client the best deal.

But if Digne really is skeptical about joining the Magpies then it’s obvious what we must do – we must move on.

It’s clear what we need this month. We need players who are going to improve the squad and want to fight for the cause. We can’t afford to have any passengers who only arrive because it was the only option they had.

Now Digne might decide he wants to join Newcastle. Amanda Staveley and co might convince him that this project is something he should be a part of. This saga certainly isn’t over.

But if the 28-year-old needs a lot of convincing to move to St James’ Park then it’s clear he’s not a signing we should make – despite his extraordinary talent.
