Potential release clause means Newcastle must sign Chris Wood from Burnley – opinion

Talk of a release clause in Chris Wood’s contract could be the golden ticket Newcastle United need this week.

The Magpies are looking to sign a striker in time to face Watford on Saturday, with Callum Wilson set to be out for eight weeks.

Newcastle’s lack of a striker cost them in the FA Cup, with multiple missed chances leading to Eddie Howe’s side being dumped out by Cambridge United.

Since then, plenty of forwards have been linked. The Telegraph first mentioned Wood on Sunday, claiming he would be keen on a move to St James’ Park.

However, a deal always felt unlikely given Burnley’s own fight to avoid relegation. Why would they weaken themselves and strengthen a rival?

But with talk that Wood may have a release clause, Newcastle might be able to do just that to the Clarets.

Release clause should push Chris Wood and Newcastle closer together

Speculation of a release clause for Wood began on Monday afternoon, and has been suggested by multiple outlets.

On the Transfer Show, Sky Sports’ Kave Solhekol said: “There have been some suggestions that there is a release clause in his contract.”

Meanwhile, Luke Edwards of the Telegraph wrote on Twitter that he is hearing that Wood may have a release clause in his contract.

Providing it isn’t a ridiculous amount, Newcastle have to move for Wood this week. As long as we match the fee, Burnley will have no choice but to accept. And given it has been claimed that the 30-year-old is keen, completing a deal should be straightforward – or as straightforward as things can be for Newcastle United.

We desperately need a forward, and Wood is ideal. He’s proven at Premier League level, and could prove to be a solid backup for Wilson when he returns to fitness.

He’s an aerial presence and a focal point, which could go hand in hand with Kieran Trippier and his wonderful delivery.

On top of his footballing ability, signing Wood could give us another advantage in the battle to avoid relegation. Not only would we get the striker we need, but we’d be taking away Burnley’s main goal threat.

While that shouldn’t be the only reason we move for the New Zealand international, it is certainly an added bonus.

It might be seen as underhanded and sly by Newcastle, but needs must given our perilous position. And release clauses are there to be activated.

We ideally need a new striker in the starting lineup against Watford, and it should be Chris Wood.
