The Chronicle has reported that Newcastle United under-23s ace Dylan Stephenson is expected to sign a new deal. The 19-year-old has been part of the Toon academy since has was 14 and has impressed thus far.
Stephenson has scored 10 goals this season for the Magpies’ under-23s from 16 appearances. The forward has already had experience training with the first team, which suggests boss Eddie Howe rates the youngster.
A standout performance this season from Stephenson came in a 2-0 win against Sunderland’s under-23s. In the grudge match, the striker bagged a brace. It certainly put him in the good books of some Newcastle fans.
Stephenson deserves some senior match experience, perhaps he could get a loan move soon
Considering how well he’s done so far in Newcastle’s youth system, a loan move next season might be good for him. With the promise he’s displayed, you’d think a lot of Football League clubs would take a chance on him.
This season we’ve seen some Toon youngsters find success on loan. Elliot Anderson, Joe White and Matty Longstaff are all doing well in League Two. All three players’ respective loan sides are pushing for promotion to League One.
Also, Stephenson would get some much-needed match experience with a senior side. Moving to League One or Two would help Newcastle identify where he’s at in his progression as a player.
Furthermore, should the 19-year-old fulfil his potential, he might save the Magpies millions in the long run. The club may have more money to play with, but will hope investment into the youth system will generate better talent.
However, we’ve seen this situation many times before. A promising youth striker tearing it up at under-23s level but never quite good enough to start. Elias Sorensen is a fairly recent example that comes to mind.
Hopefully, this isn’t the same for Stephenson. Newcastle has been yearning for a striker to come through the ranks for years. We’ll have to wait and see if Stephenson is the answer to our prayers.
