Newcastle might have to beat elite clubs to sign reported target Ritsu Doan

According to the Chronicle, Newcastle United have been scouting Japanese starlet Ritsu Doan.

The 20-year-old is currently playing his football in the Eredivisie, representing Groningen who are competing near the bottom of the division.

The youngster is highly rated, and Newcastle would need to beat off some serious competition to secure his signature.

Newcastle face a battle to sign Doan

Sadly for the Magpies, they are not the only team reportedly keen on the Japan international. And what is even sadder for Newcastle, the other clubs interested are some of the best in world football.

Earlier this month, TEAMtalk reported that Manchester City were keen on signing Doan in January.

They claim that Manchester City have actually been interested in the player since 2017. However, he decided to chance his luck at Groningen rather than the Etihad.

On top of the Premier League champions, Chelsea, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund have all registered an interest in the starlet in recent months.

So if Newcastle were able to bring Doan to St James’ Park, it would be something of a coup. The attacking midfielder is wanted by some of the biggest clubs in Europe, so it’s hard to see how Newcastle would have a chance of signing him.

But then again, playing for the Magpies is easier than playing for Manchester City. If you’re Doan, you’d fancy your chances of getting into Newcastle’s starting XI compared to City’s. While it is the attitude that would see Rafa Benitez’s side used as a stepping stone, it is sometimes something that has to be done to attract the best young talent.

If Newcastle can sign Doan in January, it would be real statement of intent.
