During a transfer window, plans can go out the window.
Indeed, last summer, Newcastle United did not intend to spend so much money on Alexander Isak towards the closing stages but an injury to Callum Wilson increased the need for a new forward.
While the club’s recruitment strategy has largely been one of coherent planning, it’s clear that they are prepared to act when something unplanned emerges.

Which brings us to Tino Livramento.
After a lengthy spell of links, the Southampton defender now looks set to join Eddie Howe’s squad for a reported £30m.
But that wasn’t always the plan.
Newcastle changed plans to sign Tino Livramento
Indeed, according to The Athletic, Newcastle altered their priorities when Livramento became a possibility.
Harrison Ashby only arrived in January as a back-up to Kieran Trippier, while Emil Krafth is starting to return from a lengthy injury.
Still, with Saints having been relegated and Livramento over a long-term injury himself, it seems Newcastle quickly changed their plans.
Also able to play at left-back, the 20-year-old looks an opportunistic signing with huge potential going forward.

Very clever business for Newcastle
Hailed as “excellent” by Gareth Southgate, the England U21 international has so much of his career ahead of him.
With Trippier the undisputed No.1 at Newcastle, Livramento can get to grips with how Howe deploys his team before having to step in at right-back.
There is believed to be an acceptance behind the scenes too that Trippier will not be able to play every game, thereby offering the former Chelsea youngster a real chance to get first-team minutes all while learning his craft under Howe.
That kind of flexibility to move for players when they become available is such a boost.
Things happen in football that provide opportunities all the time and being receptive to that can only be healthy.
