It was a first career goal for Newcastle defender Oisin McEntee, who scored for Greenock Morton against Partick Thistle. The 80th-minute strike was the only goal of the game. The Toon loanee’s side weren’t at their best but were able to take all three points.

McEntee joined on loan from Newcastle United last summer. The Irish youth level international has played 19 times for the Scottish Championship side this season.

He has been a consistent starter in the Morton back-line. They currently sit in 6th place in the division, which is around the mid-table mark.

McEntee was part of Newcastle’s youth system, joining back in 2017 from Malahide United. The Irish side currently plays in the Leinster Senior League.

McEntee boasts some success at youth level

The Irish defender scored on his Newcastle second-string debut. He netted in a 4-2 victory over West Brom.

In 2017, McEntee was part of the Magpies youth sides that reached the SuperCupNI semi-finals and the FA Cup Youth quarter-finals.

As previously mentioned, he has been capped for the Republic of Ireland at the youth level. He’s played for the U17s, U19s and U21s so far.

He’s represented Ireland at the U17s European Championship. When they were in the quarter-finals against the Netherlands, McEntee had to go in goal. This was due to a very controversial decision made by the referee.

The goalkeeper for Ireland’s U17s, Jimmy Cocoran, was given a second yellow card. This was because he’d supposedly stepped over the goal line when he saved a penalty kick.

With youth experience at one of the biggest international competitions, the 21-year-old is no stranger to a big stage match. However, the timing might not be right for McEntee on Tyneside.

Unless he really shines in the next couple of seasons or so he could be surplus to requirements. Newcastle could be set for heavy spending windows with their new owners.

Also, much of the wealth of PIF will go into the youth academy. This means that the Magpies could end up producing some promising talent in the coming years.
