Once upon a time, Newcastle fans were worried about how to stop Philippe Coutinho. But in 2020, we’re linked with signing him.
With a takeover looming, the transfer mill is throwing up incredible rumour after incredible rumour, and this weekend was no different.
In Spain and France, there were reports linking us with moves for some of the finest players around.
Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo claim that Newcastle could make a move for Coutinho, making him the marquee arrival to kick off a new era at St James’ Park.
Meanwhile, Foot Mercato in France reported on Sunday that we’re interested in Kalidou Koulibaly and Nabil Fekir. They also mentioned Edinson Cavani, who was named as a target by ESPN last week.
Where to begin?
First things first, we should be taking these rumours with more than just a pinch of salt.
Secondly, is this really the calibre of player we’ll be able to attract straight away? We’re still 13th in the Premier League, eight points clear of the relegation zone.
In contrast, Coutinho was previously one of the best players in the Premier League, while Koulibaly is one of the top defenders in world football.
If these players are available, then why would they come to Newcastle? There are surely bigger and better clubs right now who would want their services.
Why would we want Koulibaly anyway? We’ve already got Ciaran Clark! And I just don’t see why Coutinho would want to play backup to Miguel Almiron…
This is just the beginning of a wild ride. Strap yourselves in.
