Newcastle transfer news: Magpies could sign Kyle Bartley, but face competition for £3million defender

According to the Telegraph, Newcastle are one of two Premier League clubs interested in Kyle Bartley.

The centre-back was part of the West Brom team that were relegated last season, finishing second bottom.

But Bartley could have a route back to the Premier League, with the Magpies and Crystal Palace reportedly keen.

The Telegraph state that the 30-year-old could be available for a bargain fee of around £3million.

Palace’s need for defensive reinforcements is arguably greater than Newcastle’s, despite Steve Bruce’s desire to sign a new centre-back.

The Eagles released Gary Cahill, Scott Dann and Mamadou Sakho at the end of the season, leaving new boss Patrick Vieira with a depleted defence.

Will Kyle Bartley head to Newcastle?

This is the third time this year that Bartley has been linked with a move to St James’ Park.

In March, the Telegraph stated that Newcastle were keeping an eye on the Baggies defender.

Then in April, the Chronicle claimed he was one of three potential free agents the club had an interest in.

Bartley has seemingly extended his stay at the Hawthorns since then, but that hasn’t stopped him being linked with Newcastle.

At 30-years-old, it’s hard to see what Bartley could bring to St James’ Park that we don’t already have.

Bruce might want a new central defender, but we’re hardly struggling for options back there.

With Florian Lejeune back at the club after his loan spell in Spain, Newcastle have six first-team centre-backs right now.

While he would be a bargain at £3million, would Bartley really be a worthwhile addition?
