It looks like the love affair between Joelinton and Newcastle United is not going to end any time soon.

The Brazilian signed a six-year deal with the Magpies when he joined in 2019. Shortly after his arrival, Newcastle fans were counting the days until its expiry.

That is how much he struggled when he first arrived on Tyneside, but now Joelinton is a key player at St James’ Park who fans never want to say goodbye to.

That day will eventually come, but the club are currently taking steps to extend the 26-year-old’s contract beyond the summer of 2025.

That is incredibly exciting news as Joelinton edges into the final two years of his current deal. It is hard to believe he has been with us for four years now, and what a four years it has been.

The first was a real struggle, and the second wasn’t much better. But the renaissance began in the 2021/22 campaign, and he proved it wasn’t a fluke this year.

Joelinton was one of Newcastle’s best players this season, playing a major role in the club reaching the League Cup final and qualifying for the Champions League. It was his best year ever in a Toon shirt, particularly in the final third. He scored eight goals and provided three assists, getting double figures for goal contributions for the first time in his Newcastle career.

He is developing into the complete player. His goal contributions have been vital, while he has still managed to be the midfield enforcer that made him such a hit during Eddie Howe’s first season in charge. As Alan Shearer says, Joelinton is ‘aggressive‘, and it is his power that has made him such a force in this Newcastle team.

When his current deal ends in 2025, he will be 28-years-old. He still has so much more to offer, and can get even better in the coming years. He has proven how coachable he is – he soaks up everything Howe tells him like a Geordie sponge.

With talks underway, hopefully it is not too long before we are celebrating Joelinton signing a new contract.
