Newcastle have now been briefing something exciting ahead of the January transfer window

The January transfer window is looming, and it is going to be a very important month for Newcastle United.

Ever since Sandro Tonali’s suspension, it has been clear that the Magpies need to bring in a midfielder. The likes of Kalvin Phillips and Ruben Neves have been suggested as temporary solutions, although signing one of them would be more controversial than the other…

Elsewhere, Newcastle’s squad needs a bit of a boost. Eddie Howe‘s side has been decimated with injuries as of late, with a combination of a hectic schedule and rotten look leaving the Magpies rather depleted.

If the Magpies had an unlimited pot of cash, you could make a case for the club signing a centre-back, a centre-midfielder, a winger and a striker during January.

While neutrals will argue that Newcastle have exactly that courtesy of PIF, financial fair play restrictions mean that Toon officials need to be careful not to overspend. As we have seen with Everton, the consequences of breaching FFP can be brutal.

That is why it is going to be a very tough January window for Newcastle, at a time when they could really do with multiple signings coming through the door.

Luckily, it sounds like the club have a plan.

Newcastle will have money to spend in the January transfer window

According to iNews, there will be funds available for Eddie Howe to improve his squad during the January transfer window.

The report adds that Newcastle hope to do some loan deals with an option or obligation to buy, as delaying the payment helps them with regards to FFP.

We saw the Magpies do exactly that during the summer transfer window. Lewis Hall arrived on loan from Chelsea, but will become a permanent Toon player in 2024 for £28million.

That deal saw the club’s recruitment team being very creative in the transfer market, at a time when they could not really afford to spend any more money.

It was a smart decision, but one that did have a slight drawback with Hall ineligible to play this weekend against Chelsea. But that is only an issue due to Dan Burn and Matt Targett being injured.

Similar deals could be on the horizon in January, which should allow Howe to add multiple players to his squad – which will be music to his ears right now amid the ongoing injury crisis.
