You don’t expect to hear chants about a Newcastle United legend during Manchester United vs Arsenal. But that’s exactly what happened on Thursday night.
The Red Devils faced the Gunners in the Premier League, in a game where both sides were chanting about Alan Shearer.
Newcastle’s all-time leading scorer was on punditry duty for Amazon Prime, alongside Thierry Henry and Patrice Evra.
And midway through the second half, the Man United fans seemingly lost interest in the game and started signing about Shearer instead.
It was the usual ‘cheer up Alan Shearer, oh what can it mean to a sad Geordie’… You know the rest.
When this is sung during a game between Man United and Newcastle, the Toon Army normally respond with: ‘Shearer turned you down.’
But on this occasion, it was the Gunners faithful who were firing back. They sang Newcastle’s song, in reference to the fact Shearer rejected a move to Manchester United in 1996 in favour of signing for the Magpies. He also turned them down in 1992, instead joining Blackburn Rovers.
It’s crazy to think Man United fans care that much about Shearer. It was an exhilarating game at Old Trafford, yet the fans found time to chant about a pundit who rejected them more than 20 years ago.
Fair play to the Arsenal fans who gave them a bit back, and made them look a bit silly. In the end it was Man United who triumphed though, with Cristiano Ronaldo netting the winner from the spot.
But Newcastle fans were all talking about the Shearer chants, and can’t believe what they were hearing.
