According to the Chronicle, Shola Ameobi is under consideration for a role at the Newcastle academy.

There is reportedly set to be big changes to the club’s academy this summer, with three roles becoming available.

The Chronicle state that Newcastle are interested in a loan coordinator, Under-23 manager and assistant academy coach. And the former Toon striker is one of the names in contention to take on one of the roles.

Ameobi is a cult hero in the North East. Famous for scoring a plethora of goals against rivals Sunderland, he played almost 400 games for the club after making his debut in September 2000.

He was released in 2014, with his final game for the club being a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield. Ameobi was comically sent off for dissent.

Despite his cult hero status, fans are split on reports that he could be in line for a job with the club’s academy.

While some supporters think a move for Ameobi would be a bad idea when you look back at his playing career, a portion of fans believe that he could be a good fit for the academy.
