According to the Sun, Manchester City coach Mikel Arteta is one of the candidates for the Newcastle United job.

The Spaniard is untested as a manager since retiring in 2016. But he’s surely ready to make the step up, having spent three years alongside one of the best in the world in Pep Guardiola.

Arteta has played a key role in what has been a golden era for Manchester City, who recently made history by winning a domestic treble.

But his future has to be as a number one. He nearly made the step up last summer, having been heavily linked with the Arsenal job. But instead they went for a safer pair of hands in Unai Emery.

A team like Newcastle could be ideal for Arteta. They’re a decent enough size to appeal to the former midfielder, but not too big a job that the club would think they could do better. It could be a perfect match, as long as you ignore the off-field issues and problematic owner…

But what do the fans make of links with a move for the Manchester City coach? Do they think he could be the man to take the club forward following Rafa Benitez’s departure?
