Jesus Gamez’s Newcastle career was nothing to write home about.

The Spaniard moved to St James’ Park in 2016 following the Magpies’ relegation to the Championship, and Gamez looked like a solid acquisition.

Arriving on a two year deal, Gamez was known for his impressive performances for Malaga, which persuaded Atletico Madrid to sign him in 2014.

It looked as though Gamez would be perfect for the Championship, and his experience would make him a valuable figure on Tyneside.

However, that’s not how it really panned out.

Injuries derailed Gamez’s Newcastle career, racking up a grand total of 10 appearances in all competitions across two seasons.

The 33-year-old left the club this summer when his contract ended, and is still without a club.

What did Gamez have to say?

Early into his Newcastle career, the defender broke his collar bone. While Gamez was complimentary towards the city and the club’s supporters, he was less so towards manager Rafa Benitez.

“At sporting level, the fans and the teammates were sensational, but the coach did not understand the situations that happened and also the deal was not the ideal one,” he told Malaga Hoy.

“He [Benitez] is a person that I do not like talking about because he didn’t contribute anything to me in these two years and I have nothing to say about him.”

How did Newcastle fans react?

So the former player clearly doesn’t think much of Benitez, but what do some Newcastle fans on Twitter make of his comments?
