It is a knee ligament injury that has derailed Longstaff’s campaign, as he now prepares for a spell on the sidelines.

This is devastating for the youngster, who had become a first-team regular in 2019. Injury handed him his opportunity, and Longstaff took it with both hands.

His performances alongside Isaac Hayden got everyone talking, from fans to pundits. The icing on the cake was a St James’ Park goal in the 2-0 victory over Burnley.

But while Longstaff’s season is pretty much over, this is merely a setback to what is going to be an extraordinary career.

The 21-year-old has proven that he is Premier League quality. With his incredible engine and passing range, Longstaff has all the tools to be a Newcastle great. Hopefully he will be back in the first-team picture when he returns from injury.

Fans react to Longstaff injury

Fans are clearly gutted for him. However, it is not all doom and gloom as some point out.

With Mo Diame, Jonjo Shelvey and Ki Sung-Yueng now back in the fold, we do have options in centre midfield. Had this injury came in January, we’d have had a real problem.

The Magpies look on their way to Premier League survival, and the academy graduate will be able to look back and say he played a massive part in that.

He’s in good hands, just look at how fast Florian Lejeune returned after his injury!
