According to the Telegraph, Rafa Benitez will leave Newcastle at the end of the season if he does not get any new signings this month.

As we all know, the gaffer’s contract is set to expire at the end of the campaign. Through all the takeover shenanigans, fans have always been worried that we aren’t going to have Benitez for much longer.

Since taking over, the Spaniard has put pressure on the board to back him and give him the tools to do his job to the best of his ability. Alas, Benitez has never been backed, and the Telegraph report that he is now at ‘breaking point’.

The manager wants two players signed before the transfer window closes, something he asked for at the start of the month. With the clock ticking, the Telegraph’s report states that Rafa won’t sign a new contract with the club unless he gets what he wants this month.

Fans react to latest Benitez development

The general theme of Newcastle supporters’ feelings is one of resignation. Fans have been expecting this. Why on earth would a man of his calibre continue to work under these conditions?

Even if he gets his wish this month and we actually get a couple of players in, that won’t guarantee his future. Benitez has never been treated with the respect he deserves ever since he took over.

Should Benitez leave at the end of the season as expected, this will go down as the biggest wasted opportunity of Mike Ashley’s tenure. Rafa has God-like status on Tyneside, whereas Ashley is the devil. Things could get very ugly.
