Ayoze Perez looks like he’s finally getting back to his best.

In recent weeks we’ve seen the Perez of old, working hard and proving to be a nuisance for defenders. His efforts were rewarded with a goal against Huddersfield.

But it could have been more, with one effort trickling narrowly wide while another was well saved by Jonas Lossl.

The Spaniard has turned the corner, with his performances earlier in the season angering a lot of fans. Perez responded with his ‘fingers in ears’ celebration, which is now being mimicked by some members of the Toon Army.

While the 25-year-old is certainly playing much better, former Liverpool forward Luis Garcia’s comments are still a bit baffling.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Goals On Sunday (24th Feb), Garcia was asked about the Newcastle forward potentially getting a Spain call-up. He said: “He [Perez] is doing a great job and he definitely deserves a try because he has been amazing.

“It’s not easy on a team that has been on the re-build and doesn’t have any help with Rafa Benitez.

“And, to be honest, every time he gets on the pitch, he delivers something special. He’s a very technical player and he knows how to move.”

High praise from one of Rafa Benitez’s former players, but what do the fans make of his comments?

Fans react to Garcia’s comments about Perez

Most people have laughed off Garcia’s claims, which in fairness do sound a bit over the top. While Perez has improved, surely Spain have a few more inspiring attacking options.

But some supporters were quick to praise Perez, and rightly so. The arrival of Miguel Almiron seems to have given him a boost.

Long may it continue. Another goal against Burnley wouldn’t go amiss.
