There was something slightly different about Steve Bruce’s pre-match press conference this morning.
As always the Newcastle manager sat in front of a board of club sponsors, but a new brand was on display – while another was nowhere to be seen.
There were no Sports Direct logos on show during Bruce’s presser, with the red and blue branding replaced by Barbour.
The South Shields-based clothing brand does have links to Mike Ashley, as it is sold in some of his shops. However, there’s nothing to suggest there’s a link between that and Barbour becoming a new sponsor.
Sports Direct logo’s are an eyesore at Newcastle, and fans will be desperate to know if they’re still splashed all over St James’ Park for tomorrow’s game against Chelsea.

Fans have reacted to the change in sponsor, with some thinking it’s a sign that a takeover is imminent, while others suggested that Barbour could be the new kit provider. I think it’s fair to say both views have to be taken with a pinch of salt.
No one knows what the change in sponsor means, but the conspiracy theorists will likely be out in force. Sports Direct previously announced they will re-brand as the Fraser Group, so maybe that’s got something to do with it.
