Newcastle United fans have been reacting to a vow from Jamal Lewis to fight for the team ‘until the very last minute’, after he impressed against Burnley.
The Northern Ireland international yesterday started for the second game in a row in the Premier League.
Lewis had enjoyed a great return to the starting XI in midweek against Norwich City.
Eddie Howe decided he deserved to start again against the Clarets – and he again justified his selection.
Lewis made four clearances and four tackles in the game and was heavily involved, having 56 touches – only Jonjo Shelvey had more for the hosts (Sofascore).
The Chronicle gave him an 8/10 for his performance, and said in their verdict: “Offered plenty going forward and made some timely interventions defensively to justify his start. Some crucial tackles towards the end.”
It has been a tough start to life at St. James’ Park for Lewis following his £15 million transfer from Norwich in 2020.
He couldn’t find consistency in his first season and ended up losing his starting berth to Matt Ritchie.
He was also hit hard by Covid-19.
But it seems Lewis may well be turning a corner now, which is really good to see.
And the player seems up for the fight, writing on social media: “I will fight for this team until the very last minute. Thank you for the support!”

And they also loved to hear the fighting talk from the 23-year-old, who has had a tough time over the last year.
There are some hard games coming up for Newcastle, but hopefully Lewis can continue to show a good level. He can certainly take real confidence from his last two outings.
