Newcastle United fans have been reacting to the news that Demba Ba has retired from football.

The star is hanging up his boots at the age of 36, after a 16-year career.

Ba played for a host of clubs over the years, but arrived in Newcastle in 2011 after a very brief stint at West Ham United.

The former Senegal international quickly became a hit at St. James’ Park, scoring 16 goals in his first season for the Magpies.

He announced himself with a hat-trick against Blackburn Rovers only a few games in.

He would then score another hat-trick just weeks later against Stoke City.

Ba was then joined at Newcastle by his Senegal teammate Papiss Cisse mid-season, and the pair would enjoy a brilliant partnership.

His contributions that year helped Newcastle finish 5th in the Premier League, a position the club have not even come close to finishing in again since.

Sadly Ba only spent two seasons at Newcastle, with Chelsea moving to poach him in the summer of 2013.

It is believed he moved for just £7 million – the value of his release clause (BBC Sport) – which enraged supporters at the time.

In the eyes of a lot of Newcastle fans, Ba was one of the best strikers at the club in recent history.

Some even felt he was perhaps the best since Shearer, and some have maintained the club haven’t brought in anyone as good since he left.

On social media, fans in their droves have been sending messages to Ba following the news of his retirement.

Among them are Newcastle fans, with many showing their gratitude for all the goals he scored for the club (29 in 58 games).

Some have even jokingly (or possibly not at this point) begged him to come back to St. James’ for one last dance:
