For once, it’s not Newcastle United suffering takeover heartache.

Derby County were another club looking to change owners, and it seemed as though a deal was on the horizon.

It was of particular interest for Toon fans, as it involved the Bin Zayed Group.

They were the consortium who failed to buy Newcastle in 2019, despite the Sun reporting they had agreed a £350million deal.

The saga became something of a farce, as BZG went from serious players to absolute chancers.

By the end of the summer they were nowhere to be seen, as the Toon Army had to settle for a season with Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce.

After failing to buy Newcastle, BZG continued their pursuit of a football club, turning their attention to Derby.

In October 2020, the Athletic reported that Sheikh Khaled was interested in buying the Championship club.

A month later and a deal had been agreed. The group even passed the EFL’s Owners’ and Directors’ test.

Everything seemed to be heading in the right direction. But four months after a deal was agreed, the whole thing is off.

The Telegraph report that a ‘furious’ Derby County have ended negotiations, with the Bin Zayed Group failing to meet a deadline to provide funds.

It’s a blow for the Rams, but more proof that Newcastle dodged a bullet almost two years ago.

And while Derby fans hoped for a takeover, they’ve probably dodged a bullet as well. That’s the sentiment of Toon fans, who have sent support to the Derby faithful on Twitter.
