Christian Atsu has confirmed that he is leaving Newcastle United this summer.

The winger released a statement on Twitter, thanking Toon fans for their support during his five years with the club.

“I will never forget my time in the North East and for sure I will follow the results every week,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Thank you my Geordie staff, players and fans, it’s been a pleasure.”

Atsu’s contract is set to expire this month, and he will not be getting an extension.

He’s only featured for the first-team once this season, with Atsu not even making Steve Bruce’s 25-man Premier League squad. His single appearance came off the bench in the League Cup back in September.

It’s left Atsu in the lurch, but hopefully now he can get his career back on track.

The Ghanaian joined the club back in 2016, arriving on loan from Chelsea.

Atsu was part of a squad rebuild by Rafa Benitez, as he aimed to win promotion.

As the season went on, Atsu’s influence increased. He scored key goals on route to promotion, including a screamer in a 1-0 win over Rotherham early on.

He scored on the night we secured promotion against Preston, then days later netted a beautiful free-kick away to Cardiff as we chased the title.

His form earned him a permanent move, with Atsu costing £6.2million.

He was less impressive in the Premier League, but he certainly had his moments. Atsu played particularly well in Benitez’s final season before the arrival of Miguel Almiron.

But now his Newcastle United career is over.

After reading his statement, fans have started to pay tribute to a man who played an important role in the Championship-winning season.
