After a vast number of players sidelined through injury, it will be a welcome relief to Steve Bruce to have both Andy Carroll and Allan Saint-Maximin in the Newcastle squad for the Brighton game on Saturday.

In Andy Carroll’s case, it will be an opportunity for him to make his second debut for the Magpies, and while Saint-Maximin has made a couple of brief appearances, it will feel like a debut for the Frenchman if he gets some minutes on the pitch.

It is sure to give a lift to the players and coaching staff to have the injury crisis – which is what it has been – finally starting to clear.

With the added news that Sean Longstaff should be available for Leicester City next weekend, and a likely return the week after for Matt Ritchie, it has suddenly turned into a good week for the Newcastle head coach.

He will, of course, want to round it all off with a win against Graham Potter’s Seagulls, and if that comes courtesy of a goal from Miguel Almiron, then it would arguably be the icing on the cake.

But although it should be seen as a positive, not all fans have reacted that way, with many concerned that – with Saint-Maximin particularly – players are being rushed back too quickly, while other fans are a little more cynical about the news.
