A report emerged today suggesting Newcastle may be close to a move for Birmingham City’s Che Adams, who Rafa Benitez had watched during the last few games of last season.

The report claims a source close to Adams said the Magpies are interested in bringing him to Tyneside as a possible replacement for Salomon Rondon.

It is not known how credible the source is, but the Birmingham Mail have said that the Blues may not be under pressure to let their star player go, with potential Chinese investment in the St Andrews club increasing the chances of the player staying put.

Adams had an excellent season with Birmingham, scoring 22 goals, but there is a big difference in class between the Championship and the Premier League.

Dwight Gayle is one example of a player who found it much tougher to score goals consistently in the top flight, and Tammy Abraham – prolific in the second tier – also struggled to find the net regularly when at Swansea.

Needless to say, Newcastle fans have been quick to react to the rumour, and it is fair to say that not too many of them are overly impressed.

Some fans think he would be a good signing, but the negative comments far outnumber them.
