Newcastle fans love club’s Matt Ritchie tweet about the European Super League

Newcastle United fans have been reacting to a tweet from the club that has poked fun at the proposed European Super League.

The story that has rocked football continues to rumble on, with pressure now being seriously cranked up by supporters.

There has been a fierce backlash, with the consensus being that this is a self-serving move driven by greed that will ruin football.

The plans have been condemned by all corners of the football community.

This morning Toon legend Alan Shearer voiced his disapproval, and ex-Magpies defender Jonathan Woodgate has also slammed the idea.

Amid the fury though, there have been a few funny takes on the situation, as there always is where the internet is concerned.

Newcastle’s official Twitter account spoke for a lot of people this morning, when it used a clip of Matt Ritchie kicking a ‘Super League’ corner flag.

That message came on a day where Newcastle took part in a virtual meeting about the ESL along with 13 other Premier League clubs, chaired by Richard Masters.

That message that came from that meeting was that the 14 clubs ‘unanimously and vigorously’ reject plans for an ESL (via Sky Sports).
