Lee Johnson’s side found themselves 2-0 up at the Stadium of Light thanks to goals from Ross Stewart and Charlie Wyke.
But Lincoln forward Tom Hopper struck in the second-half to make the aggregate scoreline 2-3, meaning it’s the Imps that are Wembley-bound to face Blackpool.
It’s back to the drawing board for Sunderland, who will be in League One for a fourth straight year.
Sunderland’s shortcomings obviously delighted Newcastle supporters yesterday, and fans have revelled in the mockery.
Someone else who took great joy in seeing Sunderland fail was Tim Krul, who tweeted a Leonardo Di Caprio meme that had the caption ‘Checking how Mackems are doing in the play-offs’.
The goalkeeper was a popular figure during his time at St. James’ Park, and fans loved his teasing.
