Some Newcastle United fans are pushing Dwight Gayle as the man to replace Callum Wilson.

The England striker was substituted in the first-half against Southampton on Saturday, and news has arrived today from Steve Bruce that he faces between six and eight weeks on the sidelines with a torn hamstring.

It is a major blow for the Magpies, with Wilson having been brilliant since his £20 million summer move (BBC Sport).

The star had been in fine fettle, scoring 10 goals and making five assists across all competitions.

Wilson was seen as a key man to help steer the club away from a potential relegation battle, with many Toon fans concerned the club will now be dragged back into the mix.

The options to replace Wilson are not exactly stellar.

Andy Carroll is a ‘handful’ but doesn’t score that many goals.

Joelinton has really struggled since making his move from Hoffenheim in the summer of 2019 and is far from prolific.

And then there is Gayle, who is loved by Bruce but, again, doesn’t score that many goals – not in the Premier League at least.

It seems that out of the three contenders, it’s him that some Newcastle fans want to see leading the line in Wilson’s absence.
