For Jonjo Shelvey the PIF era at Newcastle United didn’t exactly get off to a flyer. He was sent off after coming on as a substitute during a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Tottenham.

Last night, he did deliver whilst playing for the under-23 outfit. Having just returned from an injury, missing the game at Crystal Palace through suspension wasn’t ideal.

As a result, he started and played the full 90 minutes as Newcastle’s young guns lost 3-2 to Wolves. Shelvey did showcase his class though, setting up two goals on the night.

Shelvey has played 174 times for Newcastle. He has found the net 16 times and also registered 24 assists for the Magpies. Ultimately though, he continues to do silly stuff.

His sending off against Tottenham didn’t help Newcastle at all. It allowed Spurs to see the win out and robbed Newcastle of setting up a grandstand finish.

Given Newcastle’s newfound wealth, some players are going to find themselves on the sidelines and in some cases, sold to raise funds for new players.

At 29, Shelvey finds himself chasing a place in the Newcastle team and it’ll be interesting to see if he can force his way into contention under the new manager.

What have Newcastle fans said about Shelvey?

There have been some pretty positive comments regarding the player’s performance last night. Some have stuck the boot in saying that he’s found his level, although you can only play what is put in front of you.

Shelvey earns £70,000-a-week at St James’ Park and in the summer he will have just a year remaining on his current deal. Right now, it’s difficult to see him getting a new deal unless something drastic happens.

The man signed from Swansea for £12 million is in something resembling limbo and he will need a strong run of form if he’s to have any chance of a Newcastle stay.

Some fans actually think the official Twitter team were having a laugh last night by claiming Shelvey went on a surging run. Supporters can’t believe this was the case and took to Twitter to discuss it.

Here is what supporters had to say regarding his latest performance for the Magpies under-23 outfit.
