Federico Fernandez is the latest player to extend his stay at Newcastle United.

Last week brought news of new contracts for Matt Ritchie and Jonjo Shelvey, and now Fernandez has committed his future to the Magpies as well.

The defender’s contract was set to expire this summer, but the club have confirmed that they have triggered a one-year extension clause.

This is fantastic news. Despite Newcastle boasting so many centre-backs, Fernandez has been our best all season.

The 31-year-old has always been reliable, proving to be another leader at the back.

He cost £6million in the summer of 2018 and it’s fair to say he’s been worth every penny.

His experience has been invaluable, and it’s great to know he’ll be sticking around for another year.

Since Newcastle moved to four at the back, Fernandez has been a rock. His partnership with Jamaal Lascelles is excellent, keeping popular players like Fabian Schar and Florian Lejeune out of the starting XI.

Unsurprisingly, Toon fans are buzzing that Fernandez is set to stay for another year.
