Joey Barton just can’t help himself, can he?

The former Newcastle midfielder was back in the North East last night. His Fleetwood Town side were up against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, and he nearly got out of there with three points.

However, a 97th minute equaliser from Max Power ensured it ended as a draw. Despite conceding late on, Barton was somewhat buoyant in the aftermath.

“We’re a miles better team than them in my opinion when it comes to passing the ball, we’ve seen that in the build-up,” he told Sky Sports.

“They’d absolutely drenched the pitch all day, because they’re scared of little old Fleetwood Town coming and outplaying them.

“They’ve gone to hoof-ball. Credit to them, Max Power’s gambled and they’ve got the goal.

“So it was very, very interesting as a former Newcastle player to see Sunderland, who were in the Premier League three years ago, celebrate like they’d won the World Cup final, having scored an equaliser in stoppage time against the mighty Fleetwood Town.”

The result leaves Barton’s side seventh in the table, three points behind the Mackems in fourth.

Despite moving into the more professional world of management, Barton just can’t seem to stop himself having a little pop at his former rivals from down the road.

The comments have obviously irked some Sunderland supporters, as they can’t understand why Barton is still so obsessed with them.

However, some Toon fans have found his post-match words hilarious. One fan even touted his as a future manager at St James’ Park.

It’s too early to predict Barton’s managerial future (and I can’t see Mike Ashley appointing him). But he’s certainly picked up some brownie points by continuing to rattle the cages of Sunderland fans.
