Newcastle United full-back Jamal Lewis is set to undergo surgery on his groin this week.

Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope has reported the Northern Ireland international is currently in Germany, ready to have an operation on an issue he has actually been contending with for some time.

Supposedly, the 24-year-old has been dealing with the problem for over a year.

Lewis, of course, will not be featuring again for Newcastle this season. He was left out of the club’s updated 25-man Premier League squad by Eddie Howe.

That decision was a difficult one for Howe to make.

Ciaran Clark and the injured Isaac Hayden were the other players to be overlooked.

Lewis had actually shown some good form at the end of 2021, when he made starts against Norwich City, Burnley, and Leicester City.

It had felt as though he perhaps might go on to have an extended run in the side.

But he then picked up a hamstring injury, causing him to miss games against Manchester City and Manchester United.

He returned to the bench against Watford and Leeds United, but didn’t get any minutes.

Lewis’ time at Newcastle has been fairly disappointing since he made his £15 million move (BBC Sport) from Norwich.

That said, it seems he has been dealing with this groin issue for a while which may have had an effect on his performances.

Jamal Lewis’ groin issue might have made Howe’s PL squad decision easy

It is interesting to hear that Lewis is now going to have surgery.

Perhaps this groin issue is something that actually made it easier for Howe to exclude him from his updated Premier League squad.

Hopefully the procedure goes well for Lewis, who does sound like he hasn’t had things straightforward at St. James’ Park.

He also got Covid last season, which supposedly had a big impact on his physical attributes.

It remains to be seen if Lewis will come back into the picture at Newcastle. Matt Targett has come in on loan and done superbly well so far and will likely be bought permanently.
