So it looks like we won’t see Jamaal Lascelles again this year.
The captain limped off in the first half against Bournemouth, unable to shake off an injury he picked up in the first couple of minutes.
With Callum Wilson bearing down on goal, a heavy touch allowed Lascelles to come across and take control of the situation. As he ushered the ball into the hands of Martin Dubravka, the Bournemouth forward gave Lascelles a nudge, forcing him to collide with his own goalkeeper.
It was a pretty cynical act from Wilson, which left two Newcastle players needing treatment. Lascelles was unable to play on, and the Sun report that he could miss the next three months of action because of a knee injury.
It’s certainly a blow as Lascelles is our captain. He’s our leader.
But Steve Bruce is blessed with options at the back. Paul Dummett replaced him on Saturday, while we also have Fabian Schar and Florian Lejeune waiting in the wings.
Any injury is bad news, but we’ve definitely got the tools to deal with this one. The bigger question is who comes in and takes the armband during Lascelles’ absence?
