The last time Andy Carroll started a game for Newcastle was January 23rd.
It was a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa, a shocking performance as Newcastle’s slide down the table continued.
Since then, Carroll has been relegated to the bench, having to settle for late cameos when the game is as good as over.
Against West Brom he was simply used to waste time, but he did have an impact last time out at home to Villa.
Once again he was a late arrival off the bench, but his presence in the box certainly played a role in grabbing a late equaliser.
However, while Newcastle’s attack is struggling, that does not mean Steve Bruce should turn to the big man against Brighton.
Some supporters want to see Carroll start on Saturday evening, but Bruce must ignore these calls.
Carroll was awful vs Brighton last time
Saturday’s game is absolutely huge.
We could be in the relegation zone by kick off, while Brighton will be buoyed by their victory last time out over Southampton.
There is huge pressure on Bruce and Newcastle, who need to find a way of scoring goals.
But our last game against Brighton proved that Carroll is not the answer.
We were hammered 3-0 at St James’ Park, with Carroll and Callum Wilson playing up front together.
The 32-year-old was shocking against the Seagulls, unable to use his aerial prowess against Brighton’s high line.
The striker was subbed off at half time, having spent 45 minutes chasing shadows.
Bruce must remember this when choosing his side for Saturday.
Carroll is not the answer at the Amex. But neither is Dwight Gayle playing on the left wing.
